INTEREST IN THE CAMBRIDGESHIRE MUSICK FAMILY:

Interest in Musick Families stems from the fact that a Musick has produced a reasonably close Y-DNA match to a Marsh family from Cambridgeshire.  It is believed the Musick concerned originated from Wales in the 1600s, however, the first recorded use of the surname Musick in the Brittish Isles, is in Cambridgeshire in the 1500s, about 12 miles from the Marsh family with the matching Y-DNA. 

It appears that Musick has variant spellings of Mursick, and Mersick.  Mersc was a very early variant spelling of Marsh in the 1100s.  Is it possible that Mer-s-c evolved into Mer-si-ck or Mu-si-ck?  One early Marsh family (de Marisco, many variant spellings, including in at least one known case de Mersc) was known to be in both Wales and Cambridgeshire before 1100.  The same de Marisco family was in Lincolnshire, and some surnames in that area look as they could have been further vaiants of Musick.  One common derivation from the de Marisco family was surnames Maris and Marris, both names which are also found in Cambridgeshire, but are more common in Lincolnshire.

I don't know if Musicks relate to Marshes.  However my curiosity has been arroused, and I am keen to learn more.  If anybody can help with origins and distribution fo Musick families in Cambridgeshire and Wales, I would like to hear from them.

TREE OF SOHAM MUSICK FAMILY:

It appears the Soham Musick family spread to SW Cambridgeshire, then Bedfordshire, and Huntingdonshire, and seemingly further from there.  I have not located any living male line descendants of this family, but Musicks tracing to Wales are common in USA.   There may have been male line descendants living in Blunham, Bedfordshire in 1881.

    There were other Mursicks in the area who may have been cousins or children of George.
    One was Matthew Musick, who m. Martha & had a son George 1627, another was
    Thomas Musick who m. Anne Tailour & had a son Oliver 1666 at Wicken

      3) Oliver Musicke: b.1636 Soham m.1658 Joane Holling at Wicken
         4) Oliver Musicke: b.1669 d.1703 m.1681 Ann Carter at Wicken
             Some sources show Oliver marrying Mercy Grey in 1703, but the dates I have seen
             indicate the marriage was after his death.
