HISTORY OF CAMBRIDGESHIRE:

http://www.cambridgeshirehistory.com/cambridgeshire/timeline/timeline8.html

DISTRIBUTION OF THIS MARSH FAMILY ASSOCIATED WITH PAMPISFORD:

This family was associated with
Waresley Huntingdonshire in the 1500s, and also with Mims & Darkes & Hackney, Middlesex.  Possibly they were associated with Essex, and based on coats of arms, it is possible they are connected to a Marsh family in Surrey.  They were described as Lords of the Manor at Pampisford, Cambridgeshire, and seemed to own many estates in various parts of Cambridgeshire, but the family seems rather mobile, and individuals moved about between different parts of the family territory in the different counties.  I don't find any Marshes baptized at Pampisford until 1784.

"A few other seats were set back from the street front: Spurstowe's house to the west, (Footnote 4) Robert Perwich's, unidentified but largest of all in 1664, (Footnote 5) and that of the Marsh family, Cambridgeshire landowners who also held Darkes in South Mimms. (Footnote 6) Sir Thomas Marsh (d. 1677), who was said to have owned the White House perhaps at the north-east end of Baxter's Court, (Footnote 7) was in 1678 admitted in remainder to a chief house on the west side of Church Street, which had been held by Thomas Marsh (d. 1657). (Footnote 8) Sir Thomas's chief house, with land stretching south behind Mare Street to Shoreditch Place, passed to his son Edward (d. 1701), who left it to his wife Grace and her son by an earlier marriage, William Parker. "by 1640 that manor belonged to Thomas Marsh (Footnote 93) of Hackney (Middx.), lord of Pampisford. http://www.hrionline.ac.uk/foxe/apparatus/person_glossaryW.html   Famous Martyr George Marsh, died about 1570, was according to some sources born in Cambridgeshire, but other sources are not so clear on where he was born.  (As he also lived in London, perhaps he related to the Pampisford Marshes??)

COATS OF ARMS:

It appears that possibly 2 (or 3) coats of arms relate to this family.

RELATIONSHIPS OF SOUTH CAMBRIDGESHIRE MARSHES:

There are speculated relationships to other South Cambridgeshire Marsh families, but to date I have no definite evidence of relationships.

The Musick family (Possibly derived from de Mersc, and old spelling of Marsh?) of Soham in the 1500s had a connection to Gamlingay (1 mile from Waresley where the Pampisford Marshes held estates) in about 1700.

The Y-DNA of West Wratting Marsh families is a little similar to a Seeley family tracing to Great Gransden (1 mile from Waresley) in the 1400s.   This Marsh family is also a little similar in Y-DNA to a Musick family (possibly from Soham, but no proof yet), and a Powell family which traces to Mildenhall in the 1400s, which is 6 miles from Soham.

TREE- MARSH FAMILY OF PAMPISFORD:

1) Thomas Marsh: b.1528 Waresley, Huntingdonshire d.1587 Stanmore Middlesex.
He was described as "of Mims Middlesex", and in 1572 as "Thomas Marsh of
Pampisford" when he purchased a Willingham Manor. Note: Waresley is about 3
miles from Croxton, where Adolf de Merc/ de Marisco held lands before 1100.

(Note: In about 1700, the Musick family of Soham had descendants who had moved
to live at Gamlingay, about 1 mile from Waresley.  Musick may derive from the
old spelling of Marsh which was de Mersc.  A Musick family possibly from Soham, and
a Marsh family from West Wratting have a slightly similar Y-DNA, making a common
    ancestor about 1066 just possible.)

   2) Ellinor Marsh: b.1556 d.1594
(Ellinor is not common in Marsh families, but Henry and Alyce Marsh had a daughter
Ellenor b.1583 in West Wratting, which is 6 miles from Pampisford.)

       Chamber"
, it is possible that this is Thomas born 1566)

                   an earlier marriage.

On the 1881 census is the following....

1) John Marsh: b. Pampisford 1810? m. Anne b.1815? Hackney Middlesex
Living 144 Wick Rd, London, Middlesex 1881.  Based on his wife being born at Hackney
it is tempting to think John might be one of the above "Pampisford" Marsh family.
