Famous Matyr George Marsh, died about 1570, lived in Cambridgeshire,
but was born in Lancashire. (Currently a "possible" descendant of
George is being DNA tested, so we may learn if there is any connection
to Cambridgeshire Marshes.)

RELATIONSHIPS OF SOUTH CAMBRIDGESHIRE MARSHES:
Although this web page was titled "Marshes of West Wratting
Cambridgeshire", it has pretty much outgrown it's title. It
started when 2 separate Marsh families tracing to West Wratting were
known. Since then, DNA testing has established that these two are
part of the same Marsh family. And following on from that, Marsh
families tracing to Great Bradley in Suffolk, Burwell in Cambridgeshire,
and Cambridge City have been DNA tested, and found to be descended
from the same Marsh family. (Y-DNA [Y chromosome DNA] is passed
on mostly unchanged from fathers to sons, so by testing Y-DNA of male
Marshes, it can be established that those having very similar or
identical Y-DNA are from the same Marsh family.)
The two original Marsh families from West Wratting are known at
different times to have been represented by family members in
adjoining villages of Carlton, Brinkley, Balsham, Bottisham, Burrough
Green, Burwell, Dullingham, Stetchwoth, Linton, and Weston Colville, with some possible links to Marsh families in West
Suffolk, eg Gt Thurlow, and Gt Bradley. Some Marsh families in the south of Cambridgeshire, eg at
Horse Heath, Castle Camps, Shudy Camps etc, seem to have relationships to Marshes in
Northern Essex and South West Suffolk, so it is possible that these could
also be connected to West Wratting Marshes. There have been a number of links
between Saffron Waldon Marshes and West Wratting, Weston Colville and other
South Cambridgeshire villages. Descendants of West Wratting Marshes are
now widely spread around the World, being well represented in England
(Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, etc) Australia (Victoria, South Australia,
NSW, Queensland) New Zealand, Denmark, South Africa, USA (Michigan) and the Pacific Islands.
In the Marsh Families DNA Project, we have established that the
following families have very similar Y-DNA, so come from the same Marsh
family.
1) Thomas
Marsh: who married Mildred Richardson 1698 at West
Wratting: see TREE 5 below.
2) John Marsh: likely born West Wratting 1787, married Anne
Clarke at Weston Colville 1806, see
TREE 6
3) John Marsh:
married 1742 Mary Crown (of Hundon Suffolk), descendants at Great
Bradley Suffolk.
4) James Marsh: residence Holy
Trinity Cambridge m. Ann Radford. Children Ann, William b.1811, Mary Anne, Harriett, Anderson 1822-71, Emma, John 1828, Eliza, Anna
Maria, Frances.
5) James Marsh: born Burwell, son Frederick
b. 1871 Burwell, many descendants Michigan USA.
See
http://marshdna.arrrg.org/TreesBurwellMarshes.htm
6) Possible DNA Link: We have identified a person of a different surname
from Marsh, which could potentially be derived from an early variant of
the surname Marsh, and this person is a relatively close Y-DNA match.
If related the relationship could be as far back as 900 years.
More research needed into this match.
Currently several other Marsh lines from the Cambridgeshire & Suffolk
area are being DNA tested, so there may shortly be other members to add
to this Marsh DNA Clan. In time it is hoped that we may be able to
find paper trail links between some of these families, or at least identify a
possible common ancestor. In theory, DNA can be used to draw a
detailed network diagram of relationships, so as more DNA data is
obtained on more descendants, we should eventually end up with a good
idea about how the branches are related. We would welcome further Cambridgeshire/
Suffolk/ Norfolk/ Essex Marsh families to participate in the Marsh
Families DNA Project. Work in Progress!
For the moment I shall leave the title of this page "Marshes from West
Wratting", but in time I will have to find a more appropriate name for
this family which clearly covers more extensive geographic areas.
TREES- MARSH FAMILIES OF WEST WRATTING:
There are a number of Marshes from West Wratting that I have not been able to link
together into trees of any size, so those for the present have been omitted.
Following are larger fragments of trees which may have some significance to present day
Marshes, and the DNA study.
TREE 1:
Marshes at "Wratting" from the 1100s: In the mid 1,100s, there was a
Simon de Merc/ de Merk,
who seems to have been a significant land holder at "Wratting".
Wratting may be a reference to "Great Wratting", which is a Suffolk
village about 6 miles from "West Wratting" in Cambridgeshire. West
Wratting was settled originally by people from the village of Great
Wratting, so there would have been early connections between the two
villages. The name de Merc/ de Merk and many variants over time
became Marsh.
Getting back to the 1,100s, records are few and far between, so it is
hard to say where Simon came from. However, the tree below is for
a Norman de Merc family which came to England with William the Conqueror
in 1066, and fought at the Battle of Hastings. For his services,
Adelolf de Merc is said to have been given lands in Cambridgeshire,
along with others in Essex, and other areas. It is a very
speculative leap, but this Norman de Merc/ Marsh family had a Gaufrid/
Geoffrey de Merc, who had a son Simon de Merc who would have been living
about the right time to have been the Simon de Merc with lands at
Wratting. Please don't accept this as fact, but just an hypothesis
to work on. If Marshes were at West Wratting in the 1400s when
parish records start being helpful, they
had to come from somewhere, and the Simon de Merc at Wratting is the
only early Marsh in the area I am aware of. Other than that a Sir
Stephen de Merc/ de Marisco (born about 1170??) who had estates in the Fens, but whose son
"Geoffrey Marsh" had a daughter and heiress who married the de Coleville who was Lord of the
Manor at Weston Colville in the 1200s. If the Simon de Merc at
Wratting is from the family below, he would have had a brother Stephen,
so the Sir Stephen de Marisco could perhaps be connected somehow to the
Simon de Merc at Wratting.
(A line thought to descend from the de Mercs/ de Mariscos has
different Y-DNA from West Wratting Marshes. However, it appears
that a major branch of the de Merc/ de Marisco family may descend from a
de Mountmorency male who married a de Marisco heiress, and adopted the
de Marisco surname. So there could be two separate Y-DNA lines
descended from the de Mariscos, using the surname de Marisco and
variants. Further research is being done. Otbert is thought to have been from a cadet branch of the Vitcom de
Marcq Family of the town of Marck in Normandy.)

had sons William,
Simon, Hugh, Stephen, Paganus. Could the
Simon have been the Simon Merc/ Merk who held lands near
Wratting/ West Wratting in the late 1100s???) (Note:
Adelolf de Merc was said to have been born at Merck-St. Lievin,
Fauquenbergues, in Artois France. I note that this area of France
was known as having being a Saxon area in ancient times.)

TREE 2:
Marshes at West
Wratting from the 1400s:
Between 1515 and 1533 there was a John Marche at West Wratting, a John Marshe at West
Wratting, and a William Marshe at Balsham, all of whom left Wills. It is possible
that Marche was a variant spelling of Marshe. One presumes it is
likely there were Marshes in West Wratting as far back as the 1400s.
Because they left wills, it is possible that they were land owners.
TREE 3:
Henrye Marshe of
West Wratting
in the 1500s: See
below: There were several Henry Marshes at Balsham about this
time. Balsham
is just over a mile from West Wratting. (The Henry Marsh born at
Balsham in 1590, was the son of .... Rule, who was descended from the same
Rule line as participant A1 in the Marsh DNA Project.)
1) Henrye Marshe: lived at West Wratting, m.Alyce. 2) Ellenor Marsh: b.1583 WW 2) Giles Marsh: b.1585 WW
2) Peter Marsh: b.1587 WW 2) Joan Marsh: b.1590 WW
TREE 4: John
Marshe of West Wratting in the 1500s:
John
below was of an age where he might have been a brother of the above Henrye. It is
possible that John Marshe was descended from either the John Marche or the John Marshe
living in West Wratting 100 years earlier. For a time, Henrye and John seem to have
been the only Marsh families in West wratting, but there were 4 in Carlton
nearby. (The Thomas, Jeffrey, Christopher, and Bartholomew Marsh in Carlton in my
view are likely to be related to each other, based on the prevalence of Jeffrey,
Bartholomew, and Christopher as Christian names in all of their families.
Christopher is also a name common in the March family of Isle of Ely about that
time.) I suspect a Gilbert Marsh born at West Wratting in 1706 may have been a gt gt
gt grandson of John below, but I can't yet establish any definite link between John's
descendants, and the large family of Thomas Marsh & Mildred Richardson which
multiplied in West Wratting from about 1700 onwards, although it is possible, even
probable in my view.
1) John Marshe:
burried
1611 West Wratting. m. Ellyn. 2) John Marsh: b.1584 WW
(There
was a John Marsh Married a Mary Draper at West Wratting in 1624, and had a son John
born 1625. John the father died in 1626. John
the son by some accounts was the
ancestors of the Marsh family of Ashdon Essex. See
http://marshdna.arrrg.org/TreeJohnOfAshdonEssex.htm)
(DNA testing has shown that the John Marsh
who married Mary Draper
is unlikely to be related to the West
Wratting Marshes in the past 1,000 years,
but the possibility of relationship can't
be totally excluded.) 2) Frances Marsh: b.1588 d.1588 WW 2) Margaret Marsh: b.1592 d.1598 WW 2) Thomas Marsh: b.1596 WW m. 1620 Mary Missing 3) Thomas Marsh: b. 1620 WW 3) William Marsh: b.1623 WW 3) Alexander Marsh: b.1626 d.1644 WW 3) John Marsh: b.1629 WW (perhaps married twice? Joan?
Elizabeth?) ?4) Mary Marsh: b.1659 WW ??4) John Marsh: b.1669 WW (m. Ann?) ?5) Robert Marsh: b.1692
d.1693? WW ?5) John Marsh: b.1696 ??4) Robbert Marsh: b.1671 d.1683? WW 3) Gilbert Marsh: b.1632 d.1632 WW 3) Matthias Marsh: b.1632 d.1632 WW 3) Edward Marsh: b1634 WW 3) Henry Marsh: b.1637 3) Robert Marsh: b.1640
(There was a Robert
Marsh married in Carlton 1668)
TREE 5:
Thomas Marsh of
West Wratting b. circa 1670: The
Thomas Marsh below is shown on many family trees on the internet, as being the son of
Thomas Marsh and Annis Haylock. It appears that Thomas & Annis had children An,
John, Aves, and Thomas b.1671. It seems to me, that this family may have had some
association with Gt Thurlow, Suffolk, and I believe each of these children was baptised in
both West Wratting, and Gt Thurlow. It may be possible that there were two separate
Thomas Marshes both married to Annis Haylocks, who had 4 children of the same name, in the
same order, at the same times, in parishes a couple of miles appart. My inclination
is to think there was only one family. If this was the case, it seems that the
Thomas born in 1671, died in Gt Thurlow, in 1680. This would mean that it is
unlikely that Thomas & Annis Marsh were the parents of the Thomas Marsh below, who
married Mildred Richardson.
I don't see a Thomas in the baptism records of any
adjoining villages who looks likely to be the Thomas Marsh who married Mildred Richardson.
My guess is that several sons of Thomas Marsh & Mary Missing, married and had
children, which don't seem to appear in the parish registers for West Wratting. (eg,
a Gilbert Marsh b.1712, is likely to be a gt grandson of Thomas & Mary) My guess
is that Thomas who married Mildred Richardson is likely to have descended from one of
Thomas & Mary's 9 sons, and that there may be a few entries or pages missing from the
parish registers.
I am told that the Marsh family of West Wratting included blacksmiths through a number of
generations. Some of the family were publicans. A number were farm labourers.
1) Thomas Marsh:
m.1698
WW to Mildred Richardson 2) Mary Marsh: b.1698 WW, m. WC to John Hyner 2) John Marsh: b.1699 WW d.1699 WW 2) Thomas Marsh: b.1699 WW d.1699 WW 2) Thomas Marsh: b.1700 m.1 Elizabeth Manfield m.2 Mary Baker 3) John Marsh: b.1727 WW d.1789 (from his will, seems to
have had no children) 3) Thomas Marsh: b.1731 WW m.1 Susan Manfield m.2 Elizabeth

b.1786 WW m. 1805 Edward Curtis 4) Thomas Marsh: b.1758 d.1827 m.1779

Waterless
The 1851 Census has a John
Marsh, widower,
aged 70, born Westly, as an inmate of Chesterton Workhouse. If
this
is this John Marsh, it is clearly unlikely the John Marsh born in
1787 is a younger brother.
Some contend that this John Marsh is the
same John Marsh born in 1787
at West Wratting, but it seems unlikely 5) Thomas Marsh: b.1783

(One alternative source suggests Robert
might have been b.1711, the son of Robert Marsh & Margaret Rooks, married at Weston Colville 1703,
and who lived at Stetchworth, where Robert the elder was parish
clerk, and it is speculated Robert's gt grandfather was Thomas Marsh
having children at Carlton in the late 1500s.) (In addition to the following children, there was an
Elizabeth Marsh born at West Wratting in about the 1750s, who married Thomas
Haylock of Gt Thurlow, and whose grandson lived with Marsh descendants of Robert &
Martha, at Dullingham in 1881. Elizabeth may have been a daughter, or grandaughter
of Robert & Martha.) 3) Martha Marsh: b.1731 Burrough Green 3) Robert Marsh: b.1732 BuGr 3) John Marsh: b.1733 BuGr (bapt 2 months after Robert??)
There was a John Marsh married Mary Webb 1764 at Brinkley. Not sure if it was this John. The following
children are speculated, but not verified. ?4) John Marsh: b.1770 Burrough Breen ?4) Ann Marsh: b.1772 Burrough Green ?4) William Marsh: b.1774 Burrough Green ?4) Lucy Marsh: b.1778 Burrough Green 3) Precious Marsh: b.1735 BuGr 3) William Marsh: b.1741 BuGr d.1801, m.1765 Frances

TREE 6:
John Marsh b. 1787
at West Wratting (descendants
at Weston Colville): below is widely shown on trees on the internet as the son of Thomas
Marsh b.1758 & Hannah Precious, who appear on the Tree 5 above at generation 4.
This appears to be incorrect, as it seems that both appear separately on at
least one census. We know John was possibly
born about Feb/ March 1787 at West Wratting, but no baptismal records can be found.
On the earliest census returns he is shown as born at West Wratting.
On some later census returns he is shown born at Weston Colville where he
lived at least since 1806 until he died. We know that because John inherited a long case clock which is said to have been passed
from father to eldest son since 1649, the date in the clock, that John is likely to have
been an eldest surviving son of an eldest surviving son etc. going back to about
1649. Thomas Marsh born 1758 would fit this scenario. Especially in view
of a will left by his uncle John Marsh b.1727 at WW (eldest son who had no
children), which leaves his belongings to his brother Thomas's son Thomas's son
John. The John Marsh who left this will died in 1889, 2 years after John was born in
1787. Possible parents of John Marsh include the following, plus a few lesser
possibilities, each possibility having something to support it when looking into the
details....
a) Thomas Marsh b.1758 WW (tree above, generation 4) and
Hannah Precious: There is a lot to support this, however, Thomas & Hannah had
sons John b.1780 at Westley Waterless, and Thomas b. 1783 at Westley Waterless.
There is no record of them dying young, or for that matter marrying, so this is a loose
end which creates a few questions as to whether they had another son John born in
1787. Thomas and Hannah would fit in with the detailed evidence very well indeed, if
it was not necessary to explain what happened to the sons John b.1780 and Thomas b.1783.
Thomas descends from Thomas Marsh b. circa 1671 and Mildred Richardson.
Descendants of 2 sons of John Marsh b.1787 have a close Y-DNA match to
Thomas Marsh b. circa 1671. They seem without doubt from the same
Marsh family, but as yet the exact relationship is not confirmed.
b) William Marsh b. WW 1766 (tree above, generation 4): William married in 1795 (age
29), and in 1800 (age 34). William was an eldest son, so the clock could have passed
via him. It would not be impossible for him to have married or had a child in 1787,
when he would have been almost 21. If he was not married at the time, the child may
have been baptized with the mother's maiden name. William seems to have had a son John
b.1801. If William had a child from an early marriage, it was possibly raised by
grandparents if the wife died. It might not preclude the son John born 1801 having
the name John, if he was not raised in the same family. There is only slim evidence
to suggest William was the father of John, but it is perhaps a possibility.
This William is also related based on DNA to descendants of John Marsh
b.1787. It may be possible by more DNA testing of related families to
determine if William was the father of John b. 1787.
c) Francis Marsh b. Babraham, and Susannah Mansfield: This couple had an eldest
(only?) son John baptised 1787 in Babraham. Francis seems to have moved about a bit,
and lived at Gt Wilbraham, where Susannah came from. This is the only John Marsh who
seems to have been baptised in Cambridgeshire in 1787, on records seen so far. There
is some evidence to support this possibility, but it seems a lower chance than other
options. It would be tempting to suspect that this Marsh line was from
the very old Pampisford Marsh family, which in turn may have traced to the
Adelolf de Marisco who fought at the battle of Hastings. A person with
a pedigree to Adelolf de Marisco does not match the Y-DNA of descendants of
John Marsh b.1787, so a connection to the Pampisford Marshes seems a little
less likely. A relationship is not impossible, as sometimes the
surname passed to a daughters son, who took the name Marsh, if there were no
male heirs of the name Marsh.
d) Carlton Marsh family: There was a Marsh family at Carlton at this time, which there are
a few hints of links to. This is perhaps a remote chance for the parents of John
b.1787, but can't be eliminated. Some of this family seemed to have been
baptized at
age 10, and possibly 20, so it is a little unclear what children were born to this family,
and when.
e) Marsh families at West Wratting seem to have had connections to Cowlinge
and Gt Thurlow, Suffolk, and Ashdon Essex, and possibly Saffron Walden in
Hertfordshire. There are lots of other "outside chances" for Marshes
from those areas to be involved in the family story.

POSSIBLE ORIGINS OF MARSH FAMILIES IN
CAMBRIDGESHIRE:
(Some rambling thoughts! Apologies if this reads a little disjointed. I
keep adding in miscellaneous facts as they surface, sometimes they may seem a little out
of context.)
Early Marshes in England- The Norman de Marisco
family: Prior to 1066, there was a Norman family of de Marck (de Merc, de Merck,
de Marck, de Marcq etc), which is said to be the ancestors of the Norman de Marisco
(Marsh) family which arrived in England in 1066 with William the Conqueror. A
Francis/ Fransisco de Marisco is said by some to have been with William the Conqueror in
1066, but I have found out little about Francis to date. An
Adelulf de Marck/
de Marisco is also said to have fought at the battle of Hastings, and he is said to the
the ancestor of the well known Somerset de Marisco family.. Adelulf de Marisco is also said to have had at least one estate in
Cambridgeshire in about 1080. One account says he had an estate in Cumberton,
Cambridgeshire, and another says he had an estate at Croxton, Huntingdonshire,
which is about 3 miles from Waresley, where the Pampisford Marshes held estates.
Comberton Cambridgeshire is about mid way between Croxton and Pampisford. Some
information on this Norman de Marisco family is on is on
http://marshdna.arrrg.org/TreeNormanDeMariscoFamilies.htm
. [note: the West Wratting Marshes don't seem to match what looks like
being the DNA line of the de Mariscos, but the position is not totally
clear, as it is possible that one part of the de Marisco line is from a
de Montmorency male line which married a de Marisco heiress, and changed
their name to de Marisco. Much more research is needed.]
William the Conqueror is said to have
established a "March" family in Cambridgeshire: It is said that
William the Conqueror rewarded a "March" family for their support in 1066, and
set them up with lands in Cambridgeshire. March families by the 1400s seem to be
centred around Isle Ely in Cambridgeshire. There is a town called "March"
about 25 miles north of Cambridge City. The early de Marisco/ Marsh family often
spelled their name de Merc/ de Merck/ de Marck etc. Perhaps "March" is a
derivation from "Merc/ Marck"?
Is the March and Marsh family one and the same?: Is it possible
that the de Mariscos/ Marshes of Isle of Ely area, and the Marches of Isle of Ely area,
were the same family, and descended from the de Marcq/ de Marcks? In more recent
times, Marsh and March have often been used as variant spellings of the same name in
Cambridgeshire. (It is curious, but by the 1841 census, only 3 male Marches were
living in Cambridgeshire, but many Marshes- had Marches died out, or changed their
name to Marsh?) I note under the Heraldry section, (http://marshdna.arrrg.org/heraldry.htm )
the fact that the "March" Coat of Arms, which is believed to relate to the
Cambridgeshire March family, is almost identical to the Coat of Arms of Richard Marsh,
brother of Dr Herbert Marsh sometime Bishop of Peterborough. (Peterborough is about 12 miles west of the town of March.) This
Herbert Marsh was born at Faversham Kent, but I don't know if his line traced back to
Cambridgeshire, which may be suggested, if he used the Cambridgeshire March coat of
arms. A very similar Coat of Arms was used by another Marsh family of a London
merchant in the 1600s. There are also other recorded uses of similar Arms by
Marshes. This March/ Marsh coat of arms had lions heads on it, while the very early
de Marisco coat of arms had a rampant lion.
Sir Stephen de Marisco: In about 1174, a Sir Stephen "de Marisco" (Marsh)
was born, and he lived around Isle of Ely in
Cambridgeshire.
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=21918#s2
He was lord of Newton, Walsoken, Tid, and St Giles, and other areas. (areas
about 10 miles north of "March" township.) His son was Jeffrey/ Geoffrey
"Marsh".
http://books.google.co.nz/books?id=DSwAAAAAQAAJ&pg=RA2-PR186&lpg=RA2-PR186&dq=%22Simon+de+Marisco%22&source=web&ots=SvhV3s-nxj&sig=JaP3YUeuRBXHeaxnG-bJTSiRkX4&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=7&ct=result#PRA2-PR82,M1
The above link is to a book which seems to establish that Sir
Stephen de Marisco of Tydd St Gyles etc was a member of the
Norman de Marisco family, and related to the Huntspill de
Mariscos, Geoffrey de Marisco who was Justicary of Ireland, and
the Pirate William de Marisco of Lundy.
The book pages 24/ 25 says that the following areas comprised
part of the de Marisco property...
Walpole, Walsoken, Tilney, Merch, Newton, West Walton, Tydd St
Gyles, Holbeach. In addition it notes that the de Mariscos
owned manors and houses at...
Kirkton, Willington, Spalding, Kirtton Maris, Kirkton- Skeldike,
Kirtkton-Holme, Grimsby- Magna, Boston, Burgh, Sutton, Kirtling,
Maltby etc.
There seems dispute over whether the de Mariscos descended
from the Vicomte de Marcq family in Normandy, or the de
Montmorency family. However, it appears that the Huntspill
and Cambridgeshire de Mariscos were the same family, wherever
they originated. |
Sir John de Marisco of Essex: A Sir John Marsh of the
Norman family lived in Essex, and had some land interests in Cambridgeshire
in the 1100s. (Possibly including a location about 6 miles from West
Wratting?) This Sir John was a descendant of Adelolf de Marisco who fought at the battle of Hastings. Sir John
"had
10 pounds in rent in Cumberton Cambridgeshire between 1189, and 1201, the gift of King
John & White Roding, Essex." White Roding is about 25 miles NE of the centre
of London. There is a town of Comberton about 14 miles west of West Wratting, or 8
miles NW of Pampisford. Current indications are that West Wratting Marshes DNA
tested, don't match the DNA of a documented descendant of Adelolf de Mariscos.
Jeffrey Marsh: Jeffrey/ Geoffrey Marsh (living 1267, son of Sir
Stephen de Marisco) had a daughter Desiderata/ Desiree, his heiress, who is said to have
married a "Sir Roger Colville of Carlton Colville (Suff.)".
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=21918#s2
"Carlton Colville" is on the East of Suffolk, near Lowestoft, and there
appears to have been a de Coleville born there in 1235 at least. A de
Coleville family were from about 1200, Lords of the Manor at "Weston Colville",
Cambridgeshire, the village 1 mile from West Wratting, and 1 mile from
"Carlton". The Weston estates seem to have come into the de Coleville
family in about 1200, when William de Coleville, Lord of Castle Bytham (Lincs.) married
heiress Beatrice de Stutville. William died in 1230, leaving his son Roger de Coleville as
heir. This Roger may have died about 1252. (See also,
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jamesdow/s030/f298586.htm
, something seems confusing to me here! The William de Colville who died 1230
seems to have had a wife Maud, not Beatrice. Roger has a wife Beatrice. Could
be there is some confusion in the different records?) I had supposed the Roger
de Coleville of Weston Colville, may have been the same person as the Sir Roger de
Colville who married Jeffrey Marsh's daughter. I thought this might link by marriage
at least, a Marsh family to Weston Colville very early on. However, I can't yet
determine if the two Roger de Colvilles are the same person. The records seem a
little confusing to me. (Jeffrey/ Geoffrey was a common name in the Norman de Marisco
family in the early years prior to 1200. When the name de Marisco had
evolved into Marsh in common usage, the name "Jeffrey" seems
particularly rare in
Marsh families in England. There are only about 23 "Jeffrey/ Geoffrey
Marsh" records on the IGI records from about 1560 to 1760 for the whole of England,
and almost all of these were in Cambridgeshire, with only one or two in adjoining
counties. About two thirds of these Jeffrey Marshes were in the village of
Carlton. Carlton is about 1 mile from Weston Colville. Is the unusually high
frequency of Jeffrey Marshes in Carlton significant?)
Jeffrey de Marisco is described as the "last of the male line". However,
similar claims of various de Mariscos being the "last of the male line" in other
parts of England, proved inaccurate, and in those other cases there were many male lines
from cousins. Jeffrey may not have had sons, but his father or grandfather may have
left other male lines in the area. As most of the rights to land stemmed
specifically from Sir Stephen, apparently being the first holder in the de Marisco family,
these may not have been claimable by Sir Stephen's male cousins.
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=21918&strquery=Marisco
The de Coleville family: The de Coleville family seems to keep
cropping up. When the de Colevilles inherited (mid 1200s?) the estates of Jeffrey
Marsh, they obtained the estates in the Isle of Ely area about 12 miles north of March.
(eg Tydd St Giles, Newton etc.) A Geoffrey de Colville owned the Manor at
"March" in 1328. This Geoffrey was possibly (???) a descendant of the
daughter and heiress of Geoffrey de Marisco/ Marsh. Is it possible the town of March
was earlier associated in some way with the de Marisco/ Marsh family?
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=21902
Is it possible that "March" may be a name derived from "de
Marck/ de Merc".
Stibbington de Mariscos:
http://www.cb5.co.uk/stmedard2.htm
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=66180 These were early de Mercs in the general region, and may have some significance. A
Henry de Marisco/ de Merc was lord of the Manor of Stibbington some time between
1147-1167. Stibbington is about 20 miles west of March. (In Huntingdonshire?)
Henry had a son Eustace de Merc. (The Adelolf de Marisco who fought at the
battle of Hastings, fought in the retinue of Eustace II, Count of
Bologne, and held lands in England under Eustace II.
He was believed to be related to Count Eustace, and possibly even
related on the direct male line to Eustace. There was a Eustace de Merc
associated with Chesterton Cambridgeshire, and Royston who seems to
unquestionably be connected to the de Marisco family of Adelolf de
Marisco who fought at the battle of Hastings.
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=66165 )
In 1211, there were brothers John & William de Merc in the area. In 1219,
a Walter de Merc was associated with Sibson, Stibbington, and Wansford. There was a
John de Merc in the area 1286 and 1322. A daughter of John de Merc married a St
Medard, and when her son Nicholas St Medard inherited de Merc estates, he took the name de
Merc. In turn his sons took the name Semark, (St Mark).
http://www.cb5.co.uk/StMedard1.htm
(NOTE: I have established that
the de Marisco/ de Merc family of Stibbington were descended from the
Norman de Marisco family, and related to the de Mariscos of White
Roding, Dunmow etc.)
The following tree is shown on Rootsweb on the internet. Adelolf
de Merc is the de Merc/ de Marisco who came to England with William the
Conqueror, and fought at the battle of Hastings. This seems to
support the view that the Norman de Marisco/ de Merc/ de Merk family was
established in the Cambridgeshire (Chesterton) Huntingdonshire (Sibbington)
Royston & Melbourn (Hertfordshire) areas. The family was also
connected to White Roding in Essex, which is another property linked
with the Norman de Mariscos. If that is the case, it links the
family with Comberton (Cambridgeshire) and Croxton. A number of
circumstantial bits of evidence suggest a connection to the Pampisford
Marsh family. NOTE: Gaufrid appears to be an early spelling
of the name Geoffrey, which was a common name in the Norman de Marisco
family.

(Speculative note by AJ Marsh- it appears that Gaufrid/ Geoffrey
had sons William, Simon, Hugh, Stephen, Paganus. Could the
Simon have been the Simon Merc/ Merk who held lands near
Wratting/ West Wratting in the late 1100s???) |
